Pterygium refers to a condition of the eye caused by the abnormal growth of conjunctiva; a dense growth of tissue across the cornea. It basically grows from the nasal side of Sclera. The main causes of Pterygium are either too much exposure to sunlight i.e the UV rays, or the environmental irritants like dust, wind or even low humidity. At Vista Eye we offer services which deal with this disease under the supervision and care of our experts and specialists in the field.

It is observed since the disease is caused by environmental irritants; it is most commonly found in people who live around the equator. Plus it is more common in men than in women. There are many simple preventive measures which our experts offer to avoid Pterygium, some of which include wearing sun glasses, use of brimmed hats and artificial tears. Hence protective measures on the sea should also be taken by wearing protective eye wear so that the UV rays from the sun could be avoided. As in the extreme cases the Pterygium can even grow completely across the front of the eye ball which may cause subsequent loss to the vision.

Since Pterygium is a benign growth it doesn’t always require a surgery but only in extreme cases when it covers the pupils obstructing the vision. A definite treatment of it could only be achieved through surgery which shall require monitoring to avoid it later in life. At Vista Eye the surgery might at the maximum take 10 minutes which is performed under an anesthetic to ensure comfort of the patient. However there might occur redness or irritation in the eye for which our experts at Vista Eye will give you proper antibiotic ointment and a patch for the eye to be worn overnight. Most of our patients have been able to resume normal activities or work the very next day!
